Human taste may become more valuable in the AI era

When generating options becomes cheap, the scarce skill is often the ability to choose what is appropriate, coherent and worth someone else’s attention.

AI can generate drafts, variations and possibilities at remarkable speed. That abundance creates a new problem: more options do not automatically produce a better decision. Someone still needs to decide which idea fits the audience, which message is honest and which direction is worth pursuing.

That work is sometimes dismissed as taste, as if it were only personal preference. In practice, taste can be a disciplined form of judgment shaped by experience, context and an understanding of the people who will receive the result.

Selection is a form of expertise

A capable editor, designer, manager or specialist does more than identify a technically acceptable option. They recognize what is out of place, what is unclear and what will create the wrong expectation for a particular audience. AI can present possibilities, but it does not automatically share the responsibility for choosing among them.

This makes selection more visible as generation becomes easier. A person who can explain why one option is stronger, safer or more useful is adding value that cannot be measured by the volume of material they produce. The explanation also gives others a standard they can learn from.

Taste needs evidence, not mystique

Good judgment should not become an excuse for opaque decision-making. In a business context, taste can be connected to customer research, brand standards, performance data and the accumulated knowledge of people who work close to the problem. The aim is to make the reasoning legible enough that a team can challenge and improve it.

AI can support this process by organizing examples, comparing options and surfacing relevant context. It should not be used to turn every decision into a popularity contest among generated variations. The important work is deciding which criteria matter and who is accountable for applying them.

Abundance raises the value of restraint

When it is easy to produce more content, more campaigns or more analysis, restraint becomes a practical advantage. A company can choose to send fewer messages, make fewer claims and focus attention on the work that has a genuine reason to exist. This can improve trust as much as it improves quality.

The same principle applies inside organizations. Not every idea needs a new tool, a new dashboard or a long generated document. A team with strong taste can protect focus by deciding what does not need to be made. That is a meaningful form of leadership in an abundant system.

The point

The premium moves from producing options to choosing well

AI makes generation more accessible. Human judgment remains essential because audiences, consequences and context are never generic. Taste is valuable when it helps a team choose a result it can stand behind.
